Wellington, June 19 (ANI): New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has admitted concern over injured veteran Daniel Vettori and said there were some serious medical discussions to be had over his future.

Vettori was a huge asset in the UK during the ICC Champions Trophy but struggled through with an Achilles tendon problem that has hampered him for nearly a year, and raises concern over his international career, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Stating that it is necessary to have further examination on Vettori's Achilles problem to make it easier for the player, Hesson said that although Vettori performed well in the tournament, he had struggled through it, for which leaving the injury as it is will not be a sustainable option at the moment.

Although he was disappointed and annoyed by New Zealand's early exit from the Champions Trophy, Hesson said that although it was a missed opportunity, it however, reflected the cut-throat nature of the tournament, which he added, is congested.

Although batting and fielding continue to be the chief concerns of the team as their top-order folded twice in Cardiff, in tricky conditions against Sri Lanka and England, with highly fluctuating fielding, Hesson, however, said that he was happy with the coaching team of himself, Bob Carter (batting) and Shane Bond (bowling).

With the batting and fielding inconsistencies, Carter's role has come under scrutiny but Hesson backed him and said he was contracted to the 2015 World Cup, although the coach did not rule out bringing in specialist coaches for the team's next assignment in Bangladesh in October.

Meanwhile, Hesson also said that he is willing to cut Luke Ronchi some slack, adding that his best batting spot remains at the top of the order in one-day cricket, despite the former Australian international finding it tough at the top, although he has been a middle order regular for Wellington and exceptional wicket keeper.

Rajkot: Cheteshwar Pujara lavished praise on allrounder Ravindra Jadeja after his exceptional form for India in all formats of the game and compared him to legendary legspinner Anil Kumble. If his performances against Australia in the Test series were superb, then Jadeja's wicket-taking spree in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy has been even better. In three matches played so far, he has taken nine wickets at a superb economy rate of 3.59 that also includes his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs.

"He has shades of Anil bhai. Just like Kumble, Jadeja too doesn't turn the ball much but if you are facing him, you have to be ready for some tough times," Pujara told Times of India. "He maintains line and length and as a batsman you need to be very careful. There's a similarity between him and Monty Panesar. You need to have patience and wait for the opportunity. That's the biggest test a batsman faces while facing Ravindra."

Jadeja has worked very hard to get back into the India and his first-class record since 2010-11 speaks volumes about the kind of hard work he has put in. In 2010-11, he got 21 wickets and in 2011-12 he picked up 18, but this season he already has 51 wickets to his name.

Cheteshwar Pujara has compared his Saurashtra team-mate to the former India captain, crediting his ability to overcome the odds.

"There were rough patches but he has proved his class. He was always a good fielder, but over the years he has focused a lot on his batting as well. He was always determined to bounce back. The domestic tournaments have helped him. It's not easy to score triple-centuries, but he has done that too," Pujara told the newspaper.

London: Amid the ball-tampering suspicions that are currently clouding England's ICC Champions Trophy campaign, South Africa captain AB de Villiers stoked the fire by admitting that England seemed to reverse swing the ball more quicker than other teams, which may be a possible concern.

England, who play South Africa at The Oval on Wednesday, are having trouble escaping from the shadow of suspicion although no official evidence about the remotest wrongdoing has been offered and no reports have been made.

The faintest whiff of interfering with the natural state of the ball tens to bring out calls of outrage about the game's moral decline, adding that cricket was always a batsman's game.

De Villiers further said that England's controversial skill with reverse swing would be looked into by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the umpires to find out why they manage to get the ball reverse quicker, and also if they are doing something illegal with the ball.

However, De Villiers admitted that there is no proof that England had tampered with the ball, adding that the Champions Trophy hosts may just have good skills in their bowling line-up.

According to De Villiers, although his team's bowlers have also tried to copy England's skill with reverse swing, they have not managed to succeed, adding that they will, however, keep on trying to find the skill to reverse swing the ball.

All teams try to gain an advantage and reverse swing, with the immediate potency it brings, is obviously beneficial.

The suspicions arose after England managed to be good at reverse-swinging at Edgbaston against Australia, and failed to do so at The Oval against Sri Lanka.

When England captain Alastair Cook complained about the umpires changing the ball and former cricketer and sport expert Bob Willis later said that the umpire Aleem Dar was on England's case the tampering floodgates opened wide.

Moscow: Indian chess star Viswanathan Anand suffered a shock loss to next World Championship challenger Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the fifth round and slipped to the joint seventh spot in the Tal Memorial Tournament.

Playing the last classical game against Carlsen ahead of the World Championship match scheduled in Chennai in November next, Anand could not find any suitable plan and was outplayed by the young Norwegian in what could be termed as a rude wake up call for the Indian world champion.

Boris Gelfand of Israel joined Hikaru Nakamura of United States in lead on 3.5 points after winning his second game in the tournament at the expense of Alexander Morozevich of Russia.

While Nakamura played his first draw in the tournament sharing point with Dmitry Andreikin of Russia the most striking thing known past the half way stage is the fact that the four Russian participants are yet to score a victory in the tournament.

With Gelfand and Nakamura in front, Carlsen and Mamedyarov are close behind on three points each. Andreikin and Fabiano Caruana of Italy share the fifth spot on 2.5 points while Anand and Karjakin are joint seventh now on two points each.

Lower down, the Russian duo of Morozevich and Vladimir Kramnik share the cellar with 1.5 points in their bag right now.

While the focus of the world stayed on the Carlsen-Anand game, Andreikin did well to keen Nakamura in check. The American had won three games in a row and was raring to go but was denied any leverage by the best performing Russian here.

In other games of the day, Mamedyarov remained focused and drew with Caruana while Kramnik played his third draw in five games here splitting the point with Karjakin.

The day belonged to Carlsen who was seen playing his last game against Anand before the world championship under the classical time control.

Explaining his opening choice by allowing the Nimzo Indian defense Carlsen said, "I thought I`d play a line that he hasn`t faced in a long time and I thought that hopefully he wouldn`t be too prepared for that."

Anand was pushed to the wall right from the early stages of the middle game and Carlsen demonstrated white`s advantage in no time.

After the 25th move, the Norwegian had no doubt he was close to winning and wrapped up the game in quick time.

Speaking about the impact of this victory Carlsen was quite upbeat.

"I think it`s good before the World Championship match to remind him that I can outplay him once in a while. Since obviously between us there have been a lot of draws, recently at least," he said.

"But I`m not going to go around and think that he`s going to have such a bad day every day at the World Championship. I`ll have to prepare for the worst, definitely.

"And to clarify, I don`t mean to prepare for the worst, that I`m going to lose necessarily, but that he`s going to be at his best and not give away anything (for) free like today," he said.

Results round 5: Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 3) beat V Anand (Ind, 2); Boris Gelfand (Isr, 2.5) beat Alexander Morozevich (Rus, 1.5); Hikaru Nakamura (Usa, 3.5) drew with Dmitry Andreikin (Rus, 2.5); Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze, 3) drew with Fabiano Caruana (Ita, 2.5); Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 1.5) drew with Sergey Karjakin (Rus, 2).

Pat Cummins, the Australia fast bowler, will play his first competitive match after nine months with a back injury for the Northern Ireland Cricket Academy on Wednesday.

Cummins was named as a non-playing member of the Australia A squad who have played four-day matches against Scotland and Ireland in the past two weeks.

The squad have travelled to Bristol to face Gloucestershire on Friday but Cummins will remain in Ireland to play for the NICA against MCC at Carrickfergus, just outside Belfast.

Forty-eight hours later he will switch colours to play for MCC against Ireland Under-19s, part of their preparations for the Under-19 World Cup qualifier in August.

Cummins has not played since October last year when he bowled four overs for 27 to help Sydney Sixers beat Lions in the Champions League final. During the tournament he complained of stiffness and on his return home was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back.

Cummins made his international debut aged just 18 on Australia's tour of South Africa in October 2011. His first, and to date only, Test at the Wanderers included 6 for 79 in the second innings, earning him the match award in a narrow Australian victory.

He has also impressed in five ODIs, including playing England at Lord's last year, and a successful World T20 in Sri Lanka where he claimed six wickets at 32.83 to help Australia to the semi-final.

Despite the understandable hype surrounding Cummins, his injury history has compelled Cricket Australia to take a conservative approach with him this time around, and he is unlikely to figure in international calculations for some time yet.

India look at ease as they train quietly and purposefully on the eve of their semi-final against Sri Lanka in Cardiff

Relaxed. That is what the Indian team are feeling at the moment. In fact, that seems to have been their state of mind throughout the tournament. Their progress might have caught the cynics off guard, especially back home, but MS Dhoni and his team could not care less. Although Dhoni did point out on the eve of the first warm-up match that it was surprising not to see numerous Indian TV channels, who had boycotted the event, unhappy with the terms and conditions set by the ICC over accreditation for non-rights holders.

Away from the glare of relentless media attention, India have trained quietly and purposefully. And it was the same in Cardiff on a warm and sunny Tuesday afternoon, where India did nothing out of the ordinary, two days ahead of their semi-final against Sri Lanka. Being such a big match, it is normal to expect teams to bring extra intensity to training. But India decided to keep things simple; greasing the nuts and bolts so that they are ready to roll out smoothly come Thursday.

Suresh Raina, obsessive when it comes to training, turned up first at Sophia Gardens, an hour before the rest of the squad arrived (at the scheduled time) in the afternoon. Taking throw downs from the fielding coach Trevor Penney, Raina focused on every aspect of his batting, especially against the moving and short ball. The success of the top order has not allowed Raina much time in the middle, so it was key that he remained in the right frame of mind.

Elsewhere, Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik asked Penney to feed them length balls, as they wanted to make certain they were sensing, eyeing and timing well. Kohli focused on leaving the ball as he felt he was not letting them go as much as he should have during match situations. Karthik went so far as to berate himself after pulling a ball too far away from his body. He communicated that to Penny, even pointing the exact distance he had connected with the ball, when all of the time he should have been lunging forward to play the pull.

Earlier, Karthik was involved in an animated chat with Indian coach Duncan Fletcher, with both men discussing the finer points about the upper cut and pull shot. It would have been fascinating to hear what was being said, but Fletcher seemed to galvanise Karthik, who was hell bent on getting things precise later.

Although the success of the Indian batting has been the central point of focus, the fast bowlers have also toiled hard, despite not having much experience with the white Kookaburra, bar Ishant Sharma. Today, Joe Dawes, the Indian bowling coach, put the trio of Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar through various drills, pointing out exactly what each needed to do in order to be more sharp. Lengths, body movement and getting certain variations accurate seemed to be Dawes' focus during the hour-long session.

Dawes, a former Queensland fast bowler, and a policeman, is a methodical guy, and at times irritates the batsmen by refusing to give them easy balls, even during throw downs. This fact was not lost on Kohli, who teased Dawes for never giving batsmen any allowance. "Always at the batsman's wrists. You can throw 300 balls, but only five will be easy to drive," Kohli joked with Dawes, who was giving a slightly hard time to Bhuvneshwar at the time.

Such light-hearted banter only happens when a team is functioning smoothly. And that has remained the key to India's success in this Champions Trophy
.

Bridgetown (Barbados): West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been forced to withdraw from the first ever Caribbean Premier League (CPL) because of his contractual obligations with English county team Derbyshire.

Organizers say Chanderpaul signed a contract with CPL, offering himself for selection but later realized that his commitment to Derbyshire provided for release only if it pertained to West Indies duty, reports CMC.

“I am extremely sorry that I will not be able to participate in the CPL because of contractual obligations,” said Chanderpaul.

“I would definitely like to make myself available for the next edition, and will have my contracts carry a clause that will permit me to play in future editions of T20 tournaments.”

Head coach Andy Roberts said it is unfortunate that Chanderpaul is unable to represent the St. Lucia Zouks.

“His experience would have added some stability to the team, and of course he is loved and respected by fans around the world,” said the former West Indies fast bowler.

“We wish him all the best this season with Derbyshire and hope to see him in the draft again next year”.

Chanderpaul’s withdrawal opens the door for Aussie batsman Luke Pomersbach to join St. Lucia.

“We are pleased with Pomersbach as a replacement option,” said Roberts.

“He is a competent middle order batsman, and we believe that he will serve our team well.”

Pomersbach was in the group of Elite Pool A players alongside Chanderpaul, and the only batsman remaining in that pool.

“I am excited about this new opportunity and really looking forward to playing in the Caribbean for St. Lucia,” Pomersbach said.

“It will be great to be a part of this first CPL and I am looking forward to some tough competitive cricket with some of the greatest T20 cricketers in the world.”

Organizers say Pomersbach’s selection is in line with the rules of the draft and does not put the St. Lucia team at any disadvantage.

The St Lucia Zouks is led by franchise players Darren Sammy and Herschelle Gibbs. The other team members are Albie Morkel, Tino Best, Tamim Iqbal, Shane Shillingford, Devon Smith, Andre Fletcher, Garey Mathurin, Liam Sebastian, Dalton Polius, Kavem Hodge, Kenroy Peters and Nelon Pascal.

The CPL begins July 30 in Barbados and concludes Aug 24 in Trinidad.

Sydney, June 19 (ANI): Cricket Australia (CA) will reportedly be sending certain players from the defeated ICC Champions Trophy squad to join Australia A to maximise preparation time for the Ashes.

Following a disappointing pool-round exit from the Champions Trophy, Australia will use the extra time before the opening tour match to give some players time with the A team, who completed a 93-run first-class win over Ireland on Monday, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The players who will join the Australia A team for their match against Gloucestershire in Bristol starting on Friday are yet to be confirmed, although stand-in ODI captain George Bailey said that a couple of batsmen from the Champions Trophy squad would also feature.

Meanwhile, national chairman of selectors John Inverarity said that calling former Pakistani asylum seeker Fawad Ahmed into the Ashes squad will be a judgment call when the time comes, adding that Ahmed's citizenship was likely to be processed in time for the first Test.

However, Inverarity stressed that nothing was locked in at this stage for Ahmed to join Australia's 16-man squad.

Ahmed will play in Australia A's next match against Gloucestershire later this week and if laws have passed Senate to make him eligible by then, a decision will be made on whether he joins the squad, the report added.

Islamabad, June 18 (ANI): Pakistan's defeat in the Champions Trophy has prompted calls from former players, media and fans to overhaul the system and ditch coach Dav Whatmore and under-performing players.

Whatmore said that the team would be reviewed with an eye on building for the 2015 World Cup, after the team's poor showing at the Champions Trophy in England.

According to the Dawn News, Pakistan's terrible beating led to their defeat in all three matches, as they failed to score above 170 runs in any match.

The former Australian batsman turned coach rejected the suggestion his players lacked in effort.

Pakistan were bowled out for 170 against the West Indies, 167 against South Africa and 165 in match against arch-rivals India in the Group B matches.

Only captain Misbah-ul Haq managed to hit two half-centuries while top order batsmen Hafeez, Farhat, Shoaib Malik and Kamran failed to score.

Pakistan will now be going for a five one-day and two Twenty20 matches in the West Indies next month.

Sydney, June 19 (ANI): Bringing a ray of hope for the Australian team after their disastrous ICC Champions Trophy campaign, captain Michael Clarke is on course to play in the Ashes.

After missing all three Champions Trophy matches with recurring back problems, Clarke is set to play the first of two four-day warm-up games, against Somerset next week, before the first Test begins at Trent Bridge on July 10, News.com.au reports.

The report further said that the skipper returns to the team as the best player in the world, the reigning Wisden Cricketer of the Year with 1595 runs at 106 including four double centuries, something not even Sir Donald Bradman achieved across the same period.

Stating that he is confident that Clarke will be fit for the five-Test series, chairman of selectors John Inverarity said that they are looking forward to having the captain, who is back training in the nets, return for the Ashes as his leadership is important for the team.

According to Inverarity, the team needs Clarke at its helm as he is a good captain, adding that he has the complete support of all his men.

According to the report, without Clarke, Australia finished winless and last in their group after going down to Sri Lanka at the Oval in the Champions Trophy, adding that it was a meek surrender for a team which had won the previous two tournaments and made it to the semi finals of the two events before that.

This latest failure comes after a 4-0 series Test flogging in India, which adds to a growing sense of foreboding heading into the Ashes with poor performances of the Australians on the field and poor behaviour off it.

Australia's chairman of selectors has told England now is not the time to dismiss his side's chances of regaining the Ashes, despite the controversy currently engulfing the tourists.

Title-holders Australia's early exit from the Champions Trophy tournament in the UK, which included a defeat by arch-rivals England, was compounded when David Warner was suspended until next month' first Test for a bar-room attack on home batsman Joe Root and fined Aus$11,500 (7,000, $11,000).

Warner's conduct was labelled "despicable" by Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland, yet the opening batsman was allowed to remain on tour rather than be sent home.

It all raised fresh questions about the squad's discipline, particularly in the light of the 'homework' incident in India earlier this year when four Australia players were made to miss a Test for failing to provide feedback requested by team management during the course of a 4-0 series loss.

Meanwhile captain Michael Clarke, now Australia's best batsman, hasn't played a competitive match since March due to a recurrence of a back injury he suffered in India and was absent again as the team's Champions Trophy exit was confirmed by Monday's 20-run loss to Sri Lanka at The Oval.

Australia's 16-man Ashes squad lacks the stellar names of recent times, with Ricky Ponting, now playing for English county Surrey, among the absentees.

But John Inverarity, Australia's chairman of selectors, insisted the Ashes squad contained the "best players available" and that history showed Australia teams written off before a tour of England had a habit of making critics eat their words.

"In 1968 it was said that we had one of the weakest squads, that was 1-1," former Test batsman Inverarity, last man out when a Derek Underwood-inspired England won the final Test at The Oval but Australia retained the Ashes, told BBC Radio's Test Match Special.

"And another time I remember the English press said it was most certainly the weakest team to come to England was in 1989 and Australia won the series 4-0.

"We have got in that squad of 16 the best players available.

"We are looking forward to them acquitting themselves well and we will see what happens."

Warner has been banned up until the start of the first Ashes Test in Nottingham, on July 10 and with Australia's squad containing several other opening batsmen, his immediate Ashes prospects appear gloomy.

But Inverarity insisted Warner could yet feature at Trent Bridge despite being banned from Australia's two warm-up matches.

"Yes, he has a chance to play, certainly," Inverarity said. "In any cricket season in years gone by you might have a wet start to the season.

"Players sometimes miss games and then come back and make centuries."

Meanwhile Inverarity, who combined his cricket career with being a schoolmaster, insisted Australia did not face fundamental problems regarding players' discipline.

"There have been one or two hiccups but basically they are a very decent, nice bunch of young men who behave themselves extremely well," he said.

"I don't think that has changed over the years."
Clarke is expected to return for Australia's first warm up game against Somerset next Wednesday.

"We very much need him at the helm," Inverarity said.
"He is a very good captain and the troops are right behind him and we very much miss him when he is not there although George Bailey has done a good job in his absence."
